Tradition and history of engagement ring
Engagement rings are immersed in tradition and the practice of offering a ring as a symbol commitment and love goes back almost five thousand years to the ancient Egyptians.
The Egyptians believed that the circle of a ring is a timeless and closed loop between a couple and thus began the custom of giving a ring as a symbol of love.
Moving a few thousands of years in the late 15, we heard the first documented cases where they saw the engagement ring as a precursor of commitment marriage, and thus began the tradition we know today.
The story goes that an accident of Austria, Archduke Maximilian of Hapsburg, it all started August 17, 1477. Princess Mary of Burgundy, Archduke promised, was the first girl to receive a ring diamond to celebrate an engagement. He proposed to her and put the engagement ring on the fourth finger (or finger) on the left hand. This placement of the ring back to the Romans who believed the "vein of love" or amoris cellar began at the end of the ring and paid directly to the heart. And so began the tradition of not only the engagement ring, but is also used in the specific finger.
For hundreds of years engagement ring has become common practice to propose marriage, but the ring Engagement Diamonds are not very popular after an innovative marketing campaign in 1947 by the DeBeers diamond company.
Frances Gerety, a young editor at the time, invented what became the best advertising slogan of the twentieth century by Advertising Age magazine, the infamous "A diamond is forever". The campaign placed diamonds as a symbol of love and commitment, and thus the ultimate engagement ring. Ironically for the story, never married young editor.
intelligent people who were DeBeers seek ways to increase diamond sales, followed by the campaign by suggesting that the salary of two to three months was an appropriate amount to spend on a symbol of their love. And it Thus began a new tradition for many, continue to be financially free in a position to propose marriage.
History tells us that the ritual behind the ring is real and stems from ancient civilizations, but what we see today as a symbol of participation and the resulting proposal is simply the product of the twentieth century intelligent advertising.
